# Run an agent loop with a tool

Generated by `cargo run -p agent_docs` from `compiler/examples/`. Edit the example files, then regenerate.

Give a model a typed tool and test the whole loop offline against a recorded two-step run.

`Tool.of` turns a named `@tool` function into a tool whose arguments are decoded against its
parameter types; `Agent.run` lets the model call it and returns the final answer as a typed
record. The test replays `tests/fixtures/research.jsonl`, a synthetic two-step cassette (a tool
turn, then the answer), through `Llm.replay`, the Anthropic adapter over the cassette, with the knowledge base the tool searches
answered by `Http.scripted`, so it needs no key and no network.

`main` calls a real model, so the harness runs the test only. The fixture's bodies, IDs and
token counts were invented (see its README); this is not live-provider validation.

From the repository root, with this checkout's `sakura` on `PATH`:

```sh
cd compiler/examples/agent_loop
sakura check --json
sakura test --json
```

### Source and tests [#source-and-tests]

`src/main.sak` includes all required imports and tests.

```sakura test id=cookbook-agent_loop project=agent_loop
// Design §15.8. `main` calls a real model, so CI runs the offline test only: `research`
// replays `tests/fixtures/research.jsonl` (a synthetic two-step cassette, see
// `tests/fixtures/README.md`) through `Llm.anthropic`, with the knowledge base scripted; the
// scripted agent-loop tests are `tests/semantics/std_agent.sak`. Difference from the design text: `Prompt`
// comes from `std/prompt` and `HttpError`, `Response`, `Status` from `std/response` (one
// home module per type, see compiler/std/INDEX.md), and `Budget.limits` is installed outside
// `Llm.anthropic`, whose handler performs `Budget`.
### `tests/fixtures/README.md` [#testsfixturesreadmemd]
```text
# Synthetic cassettes

These are **hand-authored, synthetic** HTTP cassettes (design §17.73), not recordings of a
real service: no request was ever sent to a provider, and the response bodies, ids and token
counts are invented to match the documented response shapes. They contain no secrets: secret
headers are never written to a cassette or used to match one. The first line is the
cassette header `{"schema_version":"1.0","kind":"cassette"}` (design §17.122).

`research.jsonl`: two Anthropic Messages API exchanges for `research`: a `tool_use` turn calling `kb_search`, then the structured answer. The knowledge-base request is not in the cassette; the test scripts it with `Http.scripted`.

Each request line (method, url, headers, body) was produced by running the test once under
`SAKURA_RECORD=1` with the outer `Http` scripted to answer the synthetic response, so the key
matches what the program sends byte for byte. If a change to the program, std or the runtime
changes a request, the test fails with `no recording for …`; regenerate the line the same way
(or, with a real key, `sakura test --record`) and review the diff.
```
### Compiler provenance and regeneration [#compiler-provenance-and-regeneration]
Finish only when no holes remain, independent tests pass, the requested target
builds, and contracts/tests/permissions have not been weakened. Repeat the frozen
baseline check after the final edits. Report missing prerequisites and failing
checks explicitly; do not claim a skipped test passed.
These ten projects teach supported Sakura APIs on the JavaScript backend. Each
project is exercised offline by `cargo test -p sakura_cli --test examples`;
HTTP and LLM exchanges are synthetic committed cassettes, with no network or API keys.
Use Node 26 for execution, including its built-in SQLite implementation.
The initial API baseline is compiler revision
[5cae349516c21714d90d36e87f1cfd6debe980c6](https://github.com/icantcodefyi/sakuralang/commit/5cae349516c21714d90d36e87f1cfd6debe980c6).
CI reruns these projects against the compiler in the same checkout. Build that
checkout's CLI and run `sakura --version` and `sakura prompt` before adapting a recipe.
Sakura Lang is pre-1.0: read STABILITY.md before depending on an API. An installed
skill's frontmatter records its compiler version and build revision. These teaching examples are separate from the agent
evaluation tasks.
The source of each page is its example's `recipe.md`, `sakura.toml`,
`src/main.sak` and fixture files. Run `cargo run -p agent_docs` from `compiler/`
to regenerate the cookbook and skill reference. Edit those sources, not the rendered pages.
